Michelin North America Inc. and Yokohama Tire Corp. have introduced tires for rigid-frame dump-truck applications in 33- and 49-inch rim diameter configurations, respectively.
Michelin's new tires, the Xtra Load Grip and Xtra Load Protect in size18.00R33, are the first-ever 33-inch models for this market segment with the industry's 3-star load rating. This, the firm said, will allow users to increase load capacity by up to 11 percent—as much as 12 tons, depending on application—or accommodate more distance per hour to maximize productivity.
"Quarry managers demand continuity of operations," said Jake Thompson, Michelin B2B North America mining marketing manager. "Rigid dump trucks are expected to move as much material as possible by moving faster or by carrying more load."
Thompson said this "robust" tire provides a solution that maximizes productivity and output of the quarry while delivering traction, damage resistance and increased tire life.
Michelin launched the upgraded Xtra Grip series in July 2017 in size 24.00R35, noting that the new models are designed for separate, distinct operating conditions—the Xtra Load Grip for soft, loose, muddy ground conditions and the Xtra Load Protect for hard, sharp, abrasive conditions on flat, dry surfaces.
The tread of the Xtra Load Grip features 30 percent more biting lug edges for improved braking, cornering and accelerating, Michelin said. The tire is built to handle speeds up to 21 mph thanks to cooler internal running temperatures and can yield up to 5 percent longer wear life.
