SALEM, Va.—Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Virginia L.L.C. and members of United Steelworkers Local 1023 union in Salem have agreed to a tentative labor contract.
No details on the pact were released, but according to a statement posted on the union's Facebook page, Local 1023 intends to brief its membership about the deal and then hold a vote on Aug. 31 from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sept. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.
Officials from both sides could not be reached for comment.
The previous deal spanned four years and expired Aug. 13. The union has been working under an extension of the previous contract.
The Yokohama agreement is the latest in a series of deals the USW and major tire manufacturers have reached within the last two years. The biggest was a trio of five-year deals expiring July 29, 2022, that cover about 11,000 employees at 12 manufacturing facilities operated by Bridgestone Americas Inc., Goodyear and Sumitomo Rubber USA L.L.C.
In May 2017, USW Local 164 in Des Moines, Iowa; Local 745 in Freeport, Ill.; and Local 890 in Bryan, Ohio, reached an agreement with Titan International Inc. that will run through Nov. 16, 2021.
The locals at Michelin/BFGoodrich plants in Tuscaloosa, Ala. (Local 351), and Fort Wayne, Ind. (Local 715) reached a contract in 2016 that is set to expire July 27, 2019.
