Bidgestone has been supplying its Ecopia EP500 (pictured) for BMW's i3 electric vehicles for several years. Now the tire maker will provide OE fitments on a sportier version of the EV, the i3s.

BRUSSELS—Bridgestone Europe N.V./S.A. will continue its relationship as sole tire supplier for BMW A.G.'s i3s model, an electric-powered vehicle, by providing both summer and winter tires for front and rear fitments.

In a news release, Bridgestone did not specify which tires were selected for the new i3s, but noted that they utilize the tire maker's ologic technology, which was developed specifically for electric vehicles. The technology, it added, helps to ensure both performance and safety, calling on its Ecopia EP500 tread pattern to help maintain grip in wet weather conditions.

"Ologic technology helps these vehicles optimize performance," Christophe de Valroger, vice president of original equipment for Bridgestone EMEA said in a statement. "It does this without any trade-off in terms of safety. We use a narrow Ecopia EP500 tread pattern that ensures excellent grip, even in wet weather conditions. In fact, it has been awarded EU label B-grade in rolling resistance and wet grip."

Bridgestone also noted that the tires it designed for the i3s are fitted on 20-inch rims and are 3/4 of an inch wider than those on the i3 model. These changes accommodate the i3s' sportier look with a broader rear track and more expansive wheel wells, while reducing rolling resistance to improve energy efficiency.

The continued collaboration between the auto maker and the tire maker also underscores Bridgestone's commitment to a more sustainable future.

"Bridgestone and BMW share a commitment to develop products that contribute to a sustainable future," Valroger said. "Ologic technology should help us in achieving our long-term goal of a 50 percent global reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050. We have created a unique tire for unique vehicles. We are proud to have them guide us into the future."

Bridgestone has provided original equipment fitments to BMW for 17 years.
