JERSEY CITY, N.J.—Forbes magazine has named Michelin North America Inc. its top large employer in America.
The annual listing, which was released May 1, ranks employers based on an independent survey from a sample of more than 30,000 U.S. individuals working for companies with at least 1,000 employees. Those surveyed are able to share anonymous feedback on a series of topics, including working conditions, salary, potential for development and company image.
The ranking is divided into two lists: one for companies with more than 5,000 U.S. employees, and another for the midsize companies with 1,000 to 5,000 employees.
Michelin, ranked in the survey for the third straight year, is considered part of the automotive industry list. Trader Joe's, Google, Principal Financial Group and Costco Wholesale round out the top five.
Other tire companies listed were Continental (No. 332) and Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. (No. 499)
"Michelin may not be the first organization that comes to mind when you think about corporate social responsibility, but its business model centers on sustainability—equipping airplanes, cars and motorcycles with energy-efficient tires." the article said.
"So does its employer brand: A corporate partner of the Yellowstone Park Foundation and the World Wildlife Foundation, among others, Michelin offers employees opportunities to give back, its workforce dedicating more than 31,500 days to volunteering efforts annually."
The article also lauds Michelin for being a member of the United Nations Global Compact, developing green tires with a goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 30 million metric tons by 2030, as well as supporting small businesses, with an investment of $10.8 million since 2009.
Michelin has more than 20,000 employees in the U.S. and Canada.

Michelin said it attracts high-school and college students with hands-on learning experiences through its Youth Apprenticeship program, Technical Scholars program and other high-value internship and cooperative-education opportunities.
