FAIRLAWN, Ohio—30 students from local middle schools will compete at the Summit County "You Be the Chemist" Challenge, an event organized by the Akrochem Corp.

The competition will take place March 3 at 9 a.m. at the Double-Tree Hilton at 3150 West Market St. in Fairlawn, Ohio.

Fifth- through eighth-grade students from the Copley-Fairlawn, Coventry and Highland Middle Schools will compete in a question-answer elimination game format competition using state-of-the-art software and electronic devices. Video clips of various science and chemistry experiments will be played between rounds.

The competition will determine who will move on to the state competition April 14. The state winner will represent Ohio at the national level June 18 in Washington D.C.

To attend, contact Jack Hale at 330-608-0846 or email [email protected].

"You Be The Chemist" was created in 2004 by the Chemical Education Foundation, a national nonprofit organization. The program is designed to engage fifth- through eighth-grade students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects at an earlier age, to create a better-informed general public and increase the number of students prepared to pursue STEM-related careers, according to a CEF release.

Challenge competitions are held at the local, state and national levels and are sponsored by companies in the chemical industry and community organizations.

Akrochem is a supplier of raw materials to the rubber, plastics and adhesives industries.
