INDIANAPOLIS—The Association for Rubber Products Manufacturers released its new and revised Application Guide for Radial Lip Type Shaft Seals OS-4.
The ARPM OS-4 is a guide for the selection of radial lip seals, designed to highlight the elements of a radial lip sealing system and assist in the proper specification of the element parameters, according to an ARPM release. The guide includes proper radial lip seal installation techniques.
The primary focus of the document is to inform radial lip seal users that the oil seal is just one element of a sealing system. The additional elements are: the shaft or surface upon which the primary lip of the seal operates, the housing bore into which the seal is installed, the application lubricant and the application dynamics such as shaft run out and vibration.
The publication was drafted and approved by the member representatives of the ARPM's Sealing Products Dynamic Technical Committee. The General Products Group of the ARPM also acknowledges the following member companies for contributions in the development of the publication: 3M Advanced Materials Division; AGC Chemicals Americas; Fiat Chrysler; Federal-Mogul Corp., Sealing Systems group; Ford Motor Co.; Freudenberg-NOK, General Partnership; Grace Technology and Development; SKF Sealing Solutions; Solvay Solexis; The Chemours Co. L.L.C.; Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Americas; Trostel, Ltd.; Zeon Chemicals L.P.
The standard helps seal-using customers and manufacturers use a common language to describe the seal and its features, and is useful for the engineer when designing or specifying a seal, said Greg Vassmer, ARPM Dynamic Sealing Committee chair and vice president of sales and engineering for Trostel Molding.
Keeping with ISO standards, all ARPM technical standards are reviewed every five years to establish if a revision is required. The revised Application Guide for Radial Lip Type Shaft Seals OS-4 and other technical standards are free for ARPM members or available for purchase, $30 print-on-demand for members and $225 for non-members.
