WASHINGTON—Michelin North America Inc. recalled 184 Michelin Pilot Power 3 replacement motorcycle tires, size 180/55ZR17 M/C (73W), for missing markings required by federal law.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires that one sidewall of all tires sold in the U.S. be marked with the maximum load in kilograms and pounds and the corresponding inflation pressure for this load in kPa and psi, according to the NHTSA safety recall report issued Sept. 7.
The motorcycle tires Michelin is recalling do not have these markers, the tire maker told the agency.
The lack of load and inflation information could increase the risk of tire failure, NHTSA said.
Michelin will begin sending first-class letters to tire owners the week of Sept. 25, according to the safety recall report. All tires will be replaced free of charge, and all tires recovered from owners or dealers or still in Michelin's possession will be destroyed, the tire maker said.
