Approximately 517,000 used tires were collected and diverted from waste disposal sites in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2015-2016.

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland—The Newfoundland Multi-Materials Stewardship Board has signed a contract with C&D Recycling of Goodwood, Nova Scotia, to process approximately 2,000 metric tons of scrap tires into tire-derived aggregate.

MMSB granted the contract to C&D in July after issuing a tender in April to a service provider to perform the work, according to MMSB Chief Executive Officer Mike Samson.

C&D will set up a mobile tire shredding operation at Norris Arm, about 37 miles northwest of Gander International Airport, according to Samson. C&D will be paid $390,000, or $195 per ton, he said.

The shredding should be complete by the fall of 2017, according to Samson. At that time, MMSB will begin to explore partnerships with engineers and contractors to demonstrate the use of TDA in small-scale civil engineering projects, he said.

It isn't yet certain whether this contract will lead to a permanent TDA project in Newfoundland, according to Samson.

"We cannot speculate on the outcome of the project," he said. "Currently, our goal is to explore the feasibility of processing a limited quantity of used tires into TDA and engage in partnerships to demonstrate the potential use and performance of this product over time."

Approximately 517,000 used tires were collected and diverted from waste disposal sites in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2015-2016, according to the MMSB report for those years, the latest available on the MMSB website.

Since 2002, when landfilling of tires 24.5 inches or less became illegal in Newfoundland and Labrador, more than 5.1 million tires have been diverted from landfills in the province, the MMSB said.
