WASHINGTON — Giti Tire (USA) Ltd. is recalling 394,378 Primewell Valera Touring II replacement passenger tires because they may develop cracks in their sidewalls, causing loss of air.
Giti Tire told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) it was recalling Primewell Valera tires in the following sizes:
- 185/65R14 86H
- 195/60R15 88H
- 205/55R16 91H
- 205/60R16 92V
- 215/60R17 96H
- 235/60R17 102T
All the tires were manufactured for Giti Tire by Pt. Gajah Tunggal TBK in Jakarta, Indonesia, Giti Tire said, over a period of 18 months, from April 2015 through November 2016.
The crack occurs in the lower sidewall and becomes visible usually after the tire has been in service for several months, Giti Tire told NHTSA.
Gajah Tunggal decided to issue a recall on June 23, Giti Tire said. So far 219 cracked tires have been reported and inspected, but there have been no reports of accidents or injuries, the company said.
Giti Tire will submit to NHTSA a copy of the recall letter to be sent to distributors, dealers and tire owners no later than July 15, the company said.
