CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has acquired Carolina Seal Inc. to further expand its position in key markets.
Carolina Seal specializes in the distribution of a variety of polymer seals, including O-rings, hydraulic and specialty kitting. The company operates a warehouse and office complex in Charlotte.
Its largest market segment is transportation equipment, with a strong focus on the transportation of chemicals, a spokesman said.
A business of Stockholm, Sweden-headquartered Trelleborg A.B., Trelleborg Sealing Solutions finalized the transaction Feb. 1.
Carolina Seal "is well known to us, and we are impressed with their engineering knowledge and the service they provide to customers," said Claus Barsoe, president of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions.
He said the purchase "is a good fit and gives us the opportunity to enter the fast growing chemical transportation sub segment."
Adding Carolina Seal, which has annual sales in the $5.6 million range, into the company's fold "helps to strengthen Trelleborg Sealing Solutions in attractive market segments," the spokesman said.
He said that no immediate changes are expected to be made within the acquired company and the business will continue to operate out of its facility in Charlotte.
Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has grown at a fast clip in North America, especially the U.S., within the last two years, the spokesman said. The firm's goal is to grow further, both organically and via acquisitions in the region.
In 2016, the seals business has purchased an aerospace seals manufacturer, another seal distributor and silicone product maker Specialty Silicone Fabricators.
During the last two years, according to the spokesman, "we have upgraded two manufacturing sites in the U.S., for all practical purposes into completely new facilities."
At the same time, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has remained focused on its global operation, he said, "and we now have eight central hubs in three different parts of the world. We have also expanded sub-segments, such as seals for aircraft fuselages.
"We have developed world leading products, improved our test opportunities and invested in new facilities in the U.S., United Kingdom and China."
