WASHINGTON—Michelin North America Inc. is recalling 247 X Works XZY heavy truck tires, size 315/80R22.5 156/150K, because they were incorrectly identified as approved for sale in the U.S. market.
The tires were manufactured between Jan. 1, 2011 and July 31, 2015, and are for mixed use in on/off-road conditions, Michelin told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
The tires meet all applicable federal safety and performance requirements, and are marked with a maximum load capacity and load index aligned to standards published by the European Tyre and Rim Standards Organisation, according to Michelin.
However, the tries lack the required Department of Transportation symbol and load range letter designation required for sale in the U.S., the company said.
A data entry error in an internal system improperly identified the tire as approved for U.S. sale, according to Michelin.
Michelin discovered the error in June 2015. The company petitioned for a finding of inconsequential noncompliance, but made a settlement agreement with NHTSA in January 2017 to conduct a voluntary recall.
Michelin will begin contacting owners by first class mail starting the week of Feb. 13, 2017. The letters will contain information on how to obtain correction or replacement of the improperly marked tires, NHTSA said.
Owners of the tires may also call Michelin at 888-847-8475.
