BRUSSELS—European Union chemical industry association Cefic has welcomed European Commission proposals for a new methodology to tackle dumped or subsidized imports into the region.
The European Commission's new proposal for tackling unfair trade practices is focused particularly on discriminatory access to raw materials which are used as feedstock in the chemical industry. This typically involves the imposition of export restrictions or export taxes on raw materials.
The EU's new trade defense rules “are a step forward in tackling discriminatory raw materials practices used by third countries to favor their domestic industry,” said Marco Mensink, director general of Cefic in a news release. “Where such practices lead to dumping, it should be possible to introduce higher anti-dumping duties.”
As both an importer and exporter of chemicals, Cefic said its wants a balanced approach that ensures effective defense against unfair trade without becoming harmfully protectionist.
