Mercedes requests inconsequential noncompliance on mismarked tire placards

    WASHINGTON—Mercedes-Benz USA L.L.C. has petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a finding of inconsequential noncompliance in the case of vehicle placards with incorrect spare tire information.

    The placards appear on 2,917 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class multipurpose passenger vehicles manufactured between Dec. 1, 2015 and Feb. 5, 2016, Mercedes told NHTSA.

    The vehicles are:

    • GL 350 Bluetec 4Matic SUVs (155 vehicles);
    • GL 450 4Matic SUVs (2,482 vehicles); and
    • GL 500 4Matic SUVs (280 vehicles).

    Those vehicles are equipped with spare tires size T155/80 R19 114M, Mercedes said. However, the placards identify the tires as size T165/90 R19 119M.

    Both tire sizes can be used on the vehicles and also have identical inflation pressures, so no safety issue will arise from the mismarking, Mercedes said. Also, the owners' manuals contain the correct size, it said.

    Dec. 14 is the deadline for comments on Mercedes' petition. The notice appeared in the Nov. 14 Federal Register, and can be found here.
