Huntsman's TPU used for a running shoe.

RPN/ERJ offers a daily selection of interesting new products and technologies on display at the exhibition halls at K. Today's snapshot focuses on thermoplastics elastomers:

Materials supplier Huntsman is unveiling an innovative thermoplastic polyurethane for the sports footwear market at K2016. As well as being ultra-lightweight, high cushioning and fully recyclable, the TPU material is said offer tuneable rebound properties - meaning that the TPU can provide optimised energy-return properties in shoe sole applications.

At K2016 Kraiburg TPE introduced flame retardant compounds of the FR/AD1 series. The Thermolast K TPEs were developed especially for applications in the construction industry, where they are used to ensure flexible cable installation in flush-mounting boxes. The material is flame retardant in accordance with UL94 and is included in flammability class V0. It is also said to feature “excellent” adhesion with ABS and PC in two-component injection molding and be free of latex, PVC and halogen.

    DSM targets high-temperature automotive applications.

Substitution and heat resistance are “crucial” selling points for a new grade of DSM's Arnitel thermoplastic copolyester elastomer, Arnitel HT. The new high-temperature grade has been developed for use in the flexible hot charge air ducts for turbocharged engines. The elastomer can survive continuous operating temperatures of up to 180°C and peaks of up to 190°C, and shows good resistance to oils and chemicals.

TPE compounding group Hexpol TPE has launched a range of new thermoplastic elastomer materials with enhanced haptics and touch properties. At its stand in Hall 8a —H18, the group, which brings together the Elasto and Mueller Kunststoffe businesses, will showcase how the interaction between touch, functionality and wearability has an important role to play in product design and brand aesthetics, particularly in the growing wearables market.

PolyOne's TPE technology for wearable devices.

Check out the Filip 2, a wearable phone and locator for kids to stay connected with their family. The device is made using PolyOne's GLS TPE material and, says the company, shows how TPEs can help designers match aesthetics and functionality in the Internet of Things and be a central part of today's connectivity megatrends.
