AKRON—Two longtime contributors to the International Tire Exhibition & Conference were honored at a breakfast ceremony Sept. 14 in Akron.
ITEC presented Sy Mowdood with a special appreciation award and recognized Harold Herzlich for his service as ITEC chairman, a role he has relinquished to conference co-chairs Walter Waddell and Larry Evans.
Mowdood received a special appreciation award for his contributions to ITEC. He has served as a session chair at every single ITEC since it began 20 years ago. He spent 22 years with Goodyear, beginning as a senior research chemist and eventually working on numerous projects and management assignments for the company's various divisions—including Engineered Products, Goodyear Aerospace and the Tire Division.
He left Goodyear to become the director of materials engineering at Armstrong Rubber Co., which later became Pirelli Armstrong Tire Co. Mowdood holds 24 patents and is the author of 10 publications and scientific journals.
“It gives me great pleasure to be part of ITEC,” Mowdood said. “It is a wonderful organization, and everybody around here works very hard. All of the people that joins us in the meetings, I really appreciate them because without them ITEC would not have existed. The important thing is presentation of very nice programs that dealt with advancement and new technology that also benefited the tire industry.”
Herzlich has been technical editor of Rubber & Plastics News since the early 1990s, has been conference chair of every ITEC since its inception in 1994 and has served as Rubber Division chairman in 1982. He spent his career at Armstrong Rubber Co. and later Pirelli Armstrong Tire Co. He was unable to accept the award because of a family medical issue.
