BRADFORD-ON-AVON, England—A restored 19th century rubber calender has been put on display at Kingston Mills, Bradford-on-Avon, at the site of the factory where it operated for more than a century.
Known as the Iron Duke, named after the Duke of Wellington, the calender was designed in the U.S. and built in the United Kingdom for the Kingston Mill factory in 1849.
The calender was used for bonding rubber to a woven cloth reinforcement to make waterproof sheeting.
“When the old Kingston Mill was demolished by the Avon Co. in 1972 the machine was removed to the recently established Bristol Industrial Museum under Neil Cossons,” said a report by the Bradford-on-Avon Museum.
