Bridgestone petitions for inconsequential noncompliance

WASHINGTON—Bridgestone America's Tire Operations L.L.C. has filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, requesting a decision of inconsequential noncompliance in the case of 1,167 Bridgestone VSB radial logging tires.

The tires, all manufactured between April 5, 2015, and March 30, 2016, display the proper maximum load rating for a single load, but do not have the load rating for a dual load as required by NHTSA truck tire safety standards.

Bridgestone Americas told NHTSA the noncompliance was inconsequential because the tires all meet or exceed federal performance requirements.

Furthermore, the tires all passed tests for the single tire load, which is higher and more punishing than the limits for the dual tire load, Bridgestone Americas said.

If NHTSA declines to grant Bridgestone Americas' petition, the tire maker would have to conduct a formal recall of the tires.

The notice of the petition appeared in the June 29 Federal Register and is available here.
