WASHINGTON—The Alliance for American Manufacturing is urging its supporters to contact the Republican and Democratic National Committees to encourage them to include pro-manufacturing issues in their political platforms.
“Both the Democrats and the Republicans are preparing their official party platforms for the 2016 election,” said AAM President Scott Paul in a June 24 press release. “Let's make sure manufacturing issues are included in both party platforms.”
Because the AAM is nonpartisan, it is not backing any specific candidate, Paul said. However, it has created a letter for supporters of U.S. manufacturing to sign and send to RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, he said.
The main points the AAM wants the RNC and DNC to support, according to Paul, are:
• Stopping unfair trade. “Our leaders should hold countries like China accountable when they break the rules,” Paul said.
• Strengthening our defense. “American relies on nations like Russia and China for many key materials used by the military,” he said. “We need to take immediate steps to ensure our troops are ready to respond with high-quality, American-made products.”
• Investing in infrastructure. “Our nation's roads, bridges, railways, ports, airports and water systems are in terrible shape,” Paul said. “Investing to fix them would create millions of jobs and provide a big economic boost.”
