WASHINGTON—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has granted Nitto Tire U.S.A. Inc.'s petition for a decision of inconsequential noncompliance in the case of 1,059 Nitto NT05 passenger tires, size 295/35ZR18 99W, manufactured between Dec. 14, 2014 and Aug. 1, 2015.
The sidewall markings on the tires do not include the correct generic name for the plies in the tread and sidewall areas as required by federal safety standards, Nitto told the NHTSA.
The tires are marked, “Tread 2 Steel 2 Rayon 1 Nylon; Sidewall 3 Rayon.” They should be marked, “Tread 2 Steel 2 Polyester 1 Nylon; Sidewall 3 Polyester,” Nitto said.
The impact of the error on tire safety is minimal, and Nitto has received no complaints because of it, according to Nitto. Also, Nitto corrected the error on all tires made after Aug. 1, 2015, the tire maker said.
The notice of inconsequential noncompliance appeared in the March 30 Federal Register. It can be found at here.
