Reduction Engineering Scheer Inc. has introduced a line of fully pharmaceutical-grade strand pelletizers that are used in applications where pharmaceutical drugs are mixed with active ingredients in an extruder.

Reduction Engineered, which manufactures strand pelletizing systems, said the pharma-grade pelletizers are targeted for applications that must meet strict regulations in construction, cleanability and regulatory compliance and documentation. Pelletizers for these compounding processes are carefully designed and micro-polished, the company said, so they have no hang-up points, reducing the potential for contamination. The stainless steel pelletizer system is polished to a specific finish to allow a complete cleaning, according to the company.

The company said the pharma-grade pelletizer designed similarly to its SGS 25 E4 and Bullet Series line, which it said is known for its user friendliness, fast turnarounds and efficiency. The pelletizer is available in four sizes and in cutting widths of 1-, 2-, 4- and 6-inches.

PolyOne Corp. has unveiled GLS thermoplastic elastomers that offer a metallic look and soft feel in cosmetic and personal care packaging.

The soft-touch TPEs have gold, silver and copper effects and feature a portfolio based on the 2017 InVisiO Color Inspiration Wanderlust collection from PolyOne Color and Additives, the company said.

This product can be used in overmolded caps for packages such as perfumes and shampoos, closures for containers such as lotions and serums, and cases for eye shadows and other cosmetics, PolyOne said. By selecting different grades that feature silkiness, grippy feel or soft-as-skin qualities, PolyOne said packaging designers and brand owners can convey luxury and brand distinction in both prestige and mass-market product packaging without the constraints and secondary operations that metals require.

Master Bond has released UV15X-6NM-2, a one component ultraviolet curing urethane acrylate system that the company claims is formulated for a variety of bonding, sealing, coating and encapsulation applications. Master Bond said the product has moderate viscosity and features flexibility, toughness and abrasion resistance. It is used for fiber-optic, optical, electronic, semiconductor, microelectronic and laser applications, the company said.

UV15X-6NM-2 features an elongation exceeding 200 percent, Master Bond claimed, which allows it to withstand rigorous thermal cycling and mechanical shocks. It is serviceable over the wide temperature range of -80°F to 250°F, the company said, and has good chemical resistance, especially to water, cleaning agents and oils.

Master Bond said the compound is optically clear and has non-yellowing properties, and it cures in 10-30 seconds when exposed to a UV light source. The rate of cure depends upon the system's distance from the light source, the thickness of the section and the intensity of the light source, the company said.

As a reliable electrical and thermal insulator, UV15X-6NM-2 is suited for potting and encapsulation, Master Bond claims, and it bonds well to a variety of substrates including glass, plastics including polycarbonates and acrylics, composites, metals and many types of rubbers. UV15X-6NM-2 is available from one-half pints to 5 gallons.
