WASHINGTON—The U.S. scrap recycling industry has created more than 125,000 U.S. jobs through its exports alone, according to figures issued by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries.
Exports account for more than 26 percent of the scrap recycling industry's overall economic activity, ISRI said regarding statistics it released May 18, at the beginning of Trade Week.
“Exporting to more than 160 countries, scrap recyclers play a critical role in helping the U.S. balance of trade,” ISRI President Robin Wiener said.
Scrap exports generate $28.34 billion in economic benefits to the U.S., contributing $1.31 billion in federal tax revenues and $1.65 billion in state and local tax revenues, ISRI said.
