Toyo recall extends into Canada

RICHMOND, British Columbia—Toyo Tire Canada Inc. is recalling approximately 10,000 Toyo and Nitto brand light truck tires because of the potential for a tread/belt separation in a small number of those being recalled.

The action—covering Toyo Open Country H/T with Tuff Duty and Nitto Dura Grappler Highway Terrain tires—complements and runs parallel to a recall in the U.S. of about 175,000 of the same tires, as announced by Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc. on Nov. 25.

In a small number of the tires being recalled, Toyo Tire Canada said, production variances in the belt package during the relevant production periods may have created conditions that may put undue stress on the belt edge, potentially contributing to separation of the belts.

Drivers may experience vibration or uneven tire wear during early stages of separation, the company said. If undetected, this condition potentially may contribute to a tread/belt separation and/or loss of inflation pressure, which may increase the risk of tire failure and a vehicle crash.

The tires were manufactured at Toyo plants in Sendai and Kuwana, Japan, which have the U.S. Department of Transportation ID codes of CX and N3, respectively. The Toyo-brand tires were produced from November 2008 through June 2013 and the Nittos from May 2007 through April 2012.

Owners of affected tires should return to their tire dealer as soon as possible for free replacement tires, Toyo Tire Canada said. Assistance also is available by phone at 877-682-8696 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
