Editor's Note: Each week, Rubber & Plastics News will take a look at some of the rubber industry's new products and innovations on www.rubbernews.com. Does your company have a new product or new innovation? To be considered for inclusion in this recurring feature, email [email protected]

Omnova Solutions Inc. has unveiled Chemigum PFC elastomer, a high performance product designed to meet the plastic industry's demanding requirements for food contact applications.

Chemigum PFC offers ease of processing, superior durability over pure PVC compounds, Omnova said, and complies with European Regulation EC 10/2011, which regulates plastic materials, and articles intended to come into contact with food.

This approval represents Omnova's first step in a broader global assessment of regional food contact requirements and applications.

When used in the development of end products such as food processing hoses, Omnova said Chemigum PFC delivers longer life and improved performance through its resistance to oil, grease and fat, while delivering improved thermal resistance and flexibility, excellent plasticizer retention, high elastic recovery and dimensional stability.

Additionally, Chemigum PFC elastomer powder allows PVC formulators to use a free-flowing dry blending process, which promotes precision mixing and metering in an automated manufacturing environment.

Dow Corning Corp.'s Syl-Off SL 585 Release Coating is engineered for high-speed/high-volume converting of bulk roll labels in ultra-flat release systems.

Dow Corning Corp. has introduced its Syl-Off SL 585 Release Coating, an addition to the company's Syl-Off Advantage Series of solventless silicone release technologies.

Engineered for reliable high-speed/high-volume converting of bulk roll labels in ultra-flat release systems, Dow Corning said Syl-Off SL 585 Release Coating solves anchorage and rub-off issues associated with the most challenging paper substrates used in these applications.

The Syl-Off SL 585 Release Coating provides uniform anchorage to challenging super-calendared kraft (SCK)/clay-coated papers, Dow Corning said, as well as traditional substrates, such as glassine and SCK paper. The Syl-Off SL 585 Release Coating is formulated with platinum for ease of handling and provides stable release performance in ultra-flat profiles and reduced misting at high line speeds of 800 to 1000 m/min, the company said.

According to the company, it is ideal for high-speed die-cutting and label dispensing systems and can be used for labels targeting personal care product containers, prescription bottles, food packaging, shipping materials and other labeling applications.

Customers can use this new solution in their existing Syl-Off coating equipment without additional investment, Dow Corning said. The new product is available globally by pail, drum and intermediate bulk carrier package.

Dow Corning said it designed its Syl-Off Advantage Series release coatings to help label manufacturers lower systems costs, raise converting speeds and maintain quality when using release liners made from new filmic and paper materials with thinner gauges. This product family significantly lowers platinum usage to optimize cost and security of supply, accelerates throughput and enables a broader choice of substrates. The expanding Syl-Off Advantage portfolio offers customers a wide array of solutions to compete successfully in the highly competitive and dynamic labeling industry.

NewAge Industries Inc.'s fluoropolymer tubing in PTFE, FEP and PFA has been returned to normal stock levels after a multi-year shortage of the critical raw materials needed to produce it..

NewAge Industries Inc. has announced its fluoropolymer tubing in PTFE, FEP and PFA has been returned to normal stock levels after a multi-year shortage of the critical raw materials needed to produce it.

Straight tubing and specialized versions are readily available, NewAge said. The various styles can be used for applications ranging from chemical feeds, food and beverage lines, wire insulation and solvent transfer to more complicated uses involving cryogenics, robotics, medical equipment, pharmaceutical manufacturing and deionized and ultra-pure water transfer, the company said.

Fluoropolymers are recognized for their excellent resistance to heat—up to 500°F (260°C) continuously—but can withstand temperatures below 100°F ( 73°C). Fluoropolymer tubing can handle most any corrosive chemical in use today, NewAge said.

NewAge's PTFE, FEP and PFA fluoropolymer tubing formulations are manufactured from FDA-compliant materials and provide non-stick properties for the transport of viscous or sticky materials without line clogging, according to the company. Both inch and metric sizes are available.

NewAge said other styles of fluoropolymer tubing are available to increase the product's flexibility: Corrtef corrugated FEP tubing allows for a nearly zero bend radius; and Contef convoluted PTFE tubing is easily flexed and offers flush cleaning. It is available with a stainless steel wire encircled the outer diameter for increased pressure capability and to aid in electrical grounding. Pureloc injection-molded PFA compression fittings are also stocked.
