ROSEMONT, Ill.—Avery Dennison Corp.'s Materials Group's portfolio of tire labeling recently won the Label Industry Global Awards Innovation Award for companies with more than 300 employees.
Avery Dennison said the award recognizes the portfolio's ability to boost brand image, ensure tracking ability and adhere more securely.
“We are thrilled to be recognized for an innovation that addresses real challenges in the marketplace,” said Don Nolan, president of Avery Dennison.
“We are committed to developing unique products that create value and meet demanding needs for both our customers and end users, and this portfolio an example of that promise.”
First in the portfolio is the Point-of-Purchase Tire Label, Avery Dennison said, which features a film and adhesive construction with production friendly gum patterns that increase conversion speeds. The POP label material incorporates a special back coating on the polypropylene film, which resists the migration of low molecular-weight components and processing aides from the tire surface.
The barrier prevents materials from bleeding through the surface of the label, Avery Dennison said, preventing label curl and maintaining outstanding print quality and brand appeal.
“Tires are one of the most difficult of all labeling applications because of their ‘low-energy' surfaces, which are inherently resistant to labeling,” said Mark Pickner, Durables segment director for Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials North America.
“We developed this portfolio in close consultation with tire manufacturers, who helped us understand their pain points and identify effective new solutions. This kind of collaboration is a key part of our innovation process, and we couldn't be more pleased with the results.”
The tire portfolio also features Vulcanized Tire Labels specifically designed to aid product identification.
The Label Industry Global Awards, organized by Tarsus Group, are held annually, alternating between Labelexpo Americas in Chicago and Labelexpo Europe in Brussels. Two Innovation Awards are awarded—one to a company with more than 300 employees and one to a company with fewer than 300—for a specific innovation in technology or business practice introduced in the label industry. Award entries were judged based on degree of innovation, practical impact in the marketplace and economic and environmental aspects.
“The Label Industry Global Awards represent the principal showcase for recognition of the achievements of the labels industry in technology innovation,” said Andy Thomas-Emans, group managing editor at Tarsus.
The judging panel consists of the editors of the three leading global labels trade magazines and the chairs/presidents of the label associations representing Europe and North America. The awards therefore are totally objective and won purely on merit – and recognized as such by the industry.
“Avery Dennison is one of the leading global innovators in pressure-sensitive labeling and is constantly opening up new avenues for brand owners and label printers to add value to their businesses,” Thomas-Emans said.
“This particular innovation struck the judging panel as using new technology to solve an existing problem for tire brand owners, while opening up new opportunities to track and trace tires in a market notorious for counterfeiting and product diversion, and in which product recalls require each part of an auto to be traceable to its point of manufacture and distribution.”
