Kok-saghyz (Taraxacum kok-saghyz Rodin) is a producer of natural rubber with quality equal or higher to the one, from well-known hevea (Hevea brasiliensis). We conducted a study of kok-saghyz genetic resources to select the genotypes with high natural rubber content among the different wild populations in order to create a bank of original seeds, organize collection sites for in-situ/ex-situ preservation, obtaining valuable source material for propagation of new varieties, for commercial use and international exchange of germplasm accessions. Four wild populations of kok-saghyz growing under different environmental conditions were discovered. These populations are characterized by a wide intraspecific polymorphism in their morphological features (number, form, leaf size, number of stems, number of flowers in inflorescence, seed yield, weight of the root system) and physiological properties (starting and ending dates of vegetation, periods of flowering and fruiting, disease and pest resistance, tolerance to extreme environmental factors) and importantly in the quantity of synthesized rubber. We identified kok-saghyz genotypes that contain: 27% of rubber (Kegen population), 21% (Saryzhaz population), and 16% (Tuzkol population). Thus, genotypes with high natural rubber content were selected, based on the study of intraspecific polymorphism in kok-saghyz wild populations. These unique genotypes were propagated for in-situ/ex-situ preservation. A bank of original seeds for propagation of new varieties of kok-saghyz was created by the traditional method of individual selection, based on the use of extensive kok-saghyz genetic resources in Kazakhstan. The bank of original kok-saghyz seeds can be successfully used for creation of new high-yielding varieties of this strategically important source of natural rubber, using other methods, such as hybridization, mutagenesis, cell and genetic engineering.
