HOUSTON—LyondellBasell said it will build a world-scale propylene oxide/tertiary butyl alcohol plant on the U.S. Gulf Coast, with the capacity to produce 900 million pounds of PO and 2 billion pounds of TBA and its derivatives.
The facility is scheduled to be operational in 2019. The project is expected to generate up to 1,200 construction jobs.
The PO will meet the growing demand for polyurethanes said the company in a news release.
“While we have not finalized the exact location of the plant, the abundant natural gas liquids associated with shale gas make the U.S. Gulf Coast an advantaged feedstock region,” said Pat Quarles, LyondellBasell Senior vice president intermediates and derivatives.
“This project combines our leading proprietary PO/TBA technology with low cost feedstock and demonstrates our continued commitment to capturing maximum advantage of market opportunities,” he added.
LyondellBasell is one of the world's largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, and it manufactures products at 55 sites in 18 countries.
