HALIFAX, Nova Scotia—Effective Sept. 1, the environmental handling fees on tires sold in Nova Scotia will go up 50 percent, according to the website of the province's Resource Recovery Fund Board.
The disposal fees for passenger, motorcycle, camper and trailer tires and all truck tires up to 17 inches in diameter will increase to $4.50 from $3 per tire. For truck, tractor and trailer tires between 17 and 24.5 inches in diameter, the fee will rise to $13.50 per tire from $9.
Tires larger than 24.5 inches, off-the-road tires from all-terrain vehicles and tires from farming or other heavy equipment are not included in Nova Scotia's recycling fee schedule, the RRFB said.
“In recent years, the environmental handling fees have not covered the costs of operating the program,” the RRFB said. “This fee adjustment will cover the full cost of Nova Scotia's tire recycling program and its related mandates.”
Nova Scotia has had a tire recycling program since 1996, and has recycled more than 1 million tires annually since that time, according to the RRFB. In 2009, the board began a program with Halifax C&D Recycling Ltd. to transform the province's scrap tires into tire-derived aggregate for construction and engineering applications.
