COLUMBUS, Ohio—Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. and Momentive Performance Materials Inc. has released their sustainability report.
Sustainability: 2013 highlights a number of operational and environmental improvements as a result of Momentive's sustainability initiatives. It focuses on three areas: operational excellence, product innovation and corporate responsibility, providing metrics surrounding greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, waste intensity, water usage and safety.
The firm said the number of environmental incidents decreased by 29 percent compared to 2012 and fell by 79 percent from 2007-13, which is the lowest level since being tracked.
Greenhouse gas intensity improved three out of the last four years, and overall emissions have been reduced by 3.7 percent since 2010. According to the report, emissions dropped slightly in 2013 compared to 2012.
“Our strong environmental, health and safety commitment is driving continuous improvements in how we operate our facilities throughout the world,” said Craig O. Morrison, chairman, president and CEO. “We remain committed to operating our plants safely, conserving resources, serving our customers and being active in the communities in which we operate.”
Momentive's incident rate increased in 2013 for the first time since 2008. In response, the firm said it is implementing a significant safety culture initiative that focuses on eliminating exposures and engaging employees.
“The report outlines significant gains from our 2013 efforts and acts as a guide for us to address areas of improvement so that we can attain our goal of zero incidents and injuries,” said Karen Koster, executive vice president, environmental health and safety.
