AKRON—Goodyear has selected 10 name finalists for its “Name the Blimp” contest, chosen from nearly 15,000 unique submissions.
The finalist names were chosen based on criteria such as how the name reflects the history of airships, the “majesty of lighter-than-air flight” and the tire maker's track record of delivering performance an innovation, according to Goodyear. The names include: Adventurer, Ambassador, Commitment, Excursion, Explorer, Goodwill, Inspiration, Pride of Goodyear, Resolute and Wingfoot One.
Fans can vote on their favorite name now through May 9 by visiting Goodyear's name-the-blimp website. The individual who originally submitted the winning name will receive the grand prize—access to the blimp for a day—while the other nine finalists will each receive a set of Goodyear tires.
Goodyear's new blimp, which took its first test flight in March, is larger, faster and more maneuverable than its precursor, the Akron-based tire maker said, and builds on “the company's legacy as the world's leading builder and operator of airships.”
