ZWIJNDRECHT, Belgium—Lanxess A.G. concluded the pilot phase for what it said is a highly efficient production process for butyl rubber.
The firm has developed this technology for a more sustainable production process for the last seven years. It said an important step in the process was testing the technology at two pilot plants at its production site in Zwijndrecht since spring 2012.
Lanxess said it intends to mothball the pilot plants and that a labor consultation process has begun locally to align potential impacts on staff with unions and employees.
The firm said it also operates butyl production facilities in Singapore and Sarnia, Ontario.
Lanxess' butyl rubber business unit is part of the performance polymers segment, which recorded sales of about $6.17 billion in 2013.
