COLUMBUS, Ohio—Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. and Momentive Performance Materials Inc. have announced their support for Beyond Benign's Green Chemistry Commitment program, the companies have announced.
Beyond Benign, a non-profit organization, has set itself a mission to provide current and future scientists, educators and citizens with the tools to learn about and teach green chemistry to create a sustainable future, Columbus-based Momentive said in a press release.
The GCC is a consortium program of industry, colleges and universities united around a common goal of expanding the community of green chemists and create lasting changes in education and industry to promote a lasting commitment to green chemistry, the company said.
Momentive already has begun a number of sustainability programs, according to the company. This includes planning its Chennai, India, specialty silicones site as a zero-discharge complex and re-engineering its Morganton, N.C., resin plant to save more than 19 million gallons of water annually by utilizing a closed-system cooling tower.
“As a chemical manufacturer, we strongly support education that will promote the design of chemical products and processes that are more sustainable, using a universal definition of green chemistry which is one of the key elements of the Green Chemistry Commitment,” said Karen Koster, executive vice president of environmental health and safety for Momentive.
