WASHINGTON—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued an interim final rule making changes to the Uniform Tire Quality Grading system test course near San Angelo, Texas, and is requesting comments on the changes.
In its Nov. 6 notice in the Federal Register, NHTSA said flooding has affected several water crossings along the 400-mile UTQGS evaluation course. The agency has created an alternate test course to avoid the inaccessible portions of the usual course.
"This change will not compromise the reliability of the treadwear grades, and will not impose or relax any substantive requirements or burdens on manufacturers," NHTSA said in the notice.
The change in the UTQGS course is effective, immediately, but NHTSA is giving interested parties until Jan. 6 to make any suggestions they might have for alterations to the change, it said.
