LEVERKUSEN, Germany—Momentive Performance Materials GmbH is set to unveil a liquid silicone rubber technology that the company said provides hard-soft combinations, with a range of design possibilities that expand the reach of multi-component injection molding.
MPM will unveil the UV-curing silicone rubber at the K 2013 international trade fair Oct. 16-23 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The compound is UV-cured using new, dedicated pumping and feeding equipment made by Elmet Elastomers Production GmbH. The technology allows for more affordable, lower melting point resins in the vulcanization process, enabling new approaches for hard-soft combinations with silicone rubber in consumer goods or medical applications.
The new integrated material could be used in applications such as valves, syringe components, lab ware, diagnostic devices, catheters, respiratory devices, kitchenware or other new products.
Momentive said the benefits of the product include reduced cycle times, especially with goods with high wall thickness; improved sustainability since it is cured at lower temperatures; and cost savings, since customers can consider more affordable resins.
