LINCOLN, Neb.—The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has awarded $1.93 million to fund 101 tire recycling and cleanup projects across the state.
Funded by a $1 fee on every new tire sold in the state, the Nebraska grant program funds local programs to manage the more than 1.5 million tires generated in the state each year, the agency said. The grants are part of the agency's Waste Reduction and Recycling Grants program.
The largest single grant was $118,460.25 to the City of Columbus, Neb., as 25-percent reimbursement for installation of artificial turf and track surfaces made with recycled rubber. Four other grants—all for partial reimbursement of athletic surface installation—also exceeded $100,000.
