MEMPHIS—A volunteer team from Del-Nat Tire Corp. collected 832 used and discarded tires May 11 in a charitable effort the company calls "Tires for Trees."
The company will donate $1 for each tire collected for the purchase of trees to be planted this fall in areas selected by the Memphis City Beautiful Commission, according to Del-Nat.
As for the collected tires, Liberty Tire Recycling will recycle them, Del-Nat said.
"We feel this is a perfect way for Del-Nat to contribute to our community—helping to beautify our city, and eliminating a health hazard," said Del-Nat President Jim Mayfield.
The 34 volunteers consisted of Del-Nat employees, their families and friends, the company said. The cleanup was done in South Memphis with the cooperation of Memphis City Beautiful and the Shelby County government.
