KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating a March 18 accident at a Kansas City tire recycling and used tire business, in which an employee lost both legs in a tire shredding machines.
Marco Jamies, 40, had worked at ABC Tire L.L.C. about a month at the time of the accident, according to Chris Smith, owner of ABC Tire. The shop was down for scheduled maintenance, and Jamies had invited a friend who didn't work at ABC Tire to come into the shop and talk to him, Smith said.
While Jamies was servicing the tire shredder, the friend accidentally pushed the button turning on the machine, Smith said.
The company called in trauma counselors to aid the workers who witnessed the accident, according to Smith said. Jamies, meanwhile, was scheduled to be released from the hospital this week, he said.
An OSHA spokesman said his agency is investigating the accident.
