The evolving technologies for calender roll position and nip pressure control are reviewed and compared in this paper. The influence of roll nip control on the uniformity of sheet thickness, “strike through” in fabric coating/laminating operations and cord spacing when doublecoating reinforcing cord and wire are discussed. Broad guidelines for the selection and employment of available technologies are developed with an emphasis on practical application across the spectrum of calendering operations common to the tire industry.
