In this work, important experimental controls for using indentation equipment to characterize viscoelastic solids in the frequency domain are presented along with a demonstration of the ability to spatially characterize the viscoelastic properties of elastomer compounds in cross-sections of tires. These objectives are achieved by: (1) presenting the key factors of experimental control, (2) providing a basis for sample preparation of tires in cross-section and (3) spatially analyzing the viscoelastic properties of composite tire structures in ambient conditions.
