BETHESDA, Md. (July 20, 2012)—Liberty Tire Recycling is donating 8,200 square feet of its Pinnacle Rubber Mulch and 4,600 square feet of its Smarte playground safety surfacing to build a playground for the Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.
The Children's Inn is a residential facility where sick children receiving treatment at NIH and their families may stay free of charge. Liberty Tire is donating the playground material through KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping children through the building of playgrounds.
Liberty Tire said a six-inch layer of Pinnacle Rubber Mulch will cushion a child's fall from as high as 16 feet. It is non-allergenic, non-toxic and harmless to children, pets and plants and will last for 12 years of normal use, the company said.
The Smarte System uses Pinnacle Rubber Mulch for its base and impact layer, with artificial turf installed on top, Liberty Tire said. The system creates a playground surface that is wheelchair-accessible, low-maintenance, durable and environmentally friendly, it said.
Groundbreaking for the new playground will take place July 23 at the Children's Inn.
