SUMTER, S.C. (March 28, 2012)—Continental Tire the Americas L.L.C. executives predict its $500 million car and light truck tire plant in Sumter will start up early 2014.
Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony today, Conti officials said the firm should start installing equipment by May next year.
Production should hit 800,000 units at the site in its first year and 2 million in 2015, 3 million in 2016 and 5 million by 2017, according to Project Manager Craig Bartman. He said by 2017 employment will each 800.
After that, the second phase of the project will begin, he said, to push capacity to 8 million units and 1,600 employees.
