HOUSTON (Oct. 27, 2011)—Peter Boorman, retired from Shell International, and Giandomenic Stella of ExxonMobil Chemical Co. have been named recipient of the highest awards given by the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers.
Boorman will receive the General Award for his contributions to the success of the IISRP and the synthetic rubber industry, and Stella the Technical Award for his scientific achievements. the organization said. They will be presented with the honors at the group's 53 rd Annual General Meeting in Venice, Italy, the week of April 16, 2012.
A 45-year industry veteran, Boorman began his IISRP activities in 1966 with International Synthetic Rubber in England. When Enoxy Chemical acquired the firm in 1983, Boorman left for Shell International, and held many management posts there until retiring in 1966.
As an IISRP participant, he campaigned for the Russian SR industry joining the group, which eventually occurred. He has served as treasurer and president-international of the IISRP, and led the organization through a restructuring.
Boorman is the principal at PEB Consultants, working for the SR and ancillary industries, particularly in the development of multitrip metal packaging as a replacement for wood.
Stella joined ExxonMobil Chemical in 1974 at the Brussels (Belgium) Technology Center, in the rubber technology organization. He held a number of technical and managerial positions involving ExxonMobil Chemical elastomers, EPDM, butyl, plastomers and functionalized products.
He was instrumental in correlating the EPDM polymer structures with compounds processability and performance, and has developed theories to model the resulting rubber compounds' behaviors and attributes.
The IISRP said the Stella first proposed a theory for the incorporation of carbon black during the mixing cycle, and developed the productivity gain theory for the EPDM bimodal grade technology.
He also was involved in the development of the metallocene technology, including grades and marketing of a new family of EPDM rubbers.
