GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 15, 2011)—Michelin North America Inc. has been selected to build and supply tires for the Comac C919, the first commercial airliner designed in China.
The supply contract, which grew out of an alliance with Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China beginning in November 2009, is for Michelin's Air X radial aircraft tires. It is the first time that Michelin will provide tires for a Chinese airliner.
Greenville-based Michelin said it had to meet a series of challenges and requirements during the selection process, including showing its ability to help lower aircraft operating costs, provide technical assistance in China and increase Asian production capacity.
The Comac's first flight is expected to take place in 2014, and its entry into service will likely be in 2016, the tire maker said.
