SINGAPORE (Jan. 14, 2010)—The International Rubber Study Group has cancelled its World Rubber Summit in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, because of the unsettled political situation in that African country.
The intergovernmental organization said it is seeking an alternative venue for its 2011 meeting, which was scheduled for April 5-6 and is titled Sustainable Rubber: A Journey to a Greener Future.”
The West African nation has been in a political crisis since the presidential election in November. Incumbent Laurent Gbagbo refused to give up the presidency to Alassane Ouattara, who was proclaimed the winner of the United Nations-certified poll by the electoral commission and is recognized by foreign governments. The pro-Gbagbo Constitutional Council overturned the results.
