Like many young men who grew up in Akron in the 1940s and 1950s, Edward L. Bittle went to work in the city's rubber industry after graduating from high school. But unlike most of those who toiled in the “Rubber Capital of the World,” Bittle became an expert in a niche product—inflatable canopy seals—and parlayed that knowledge into forming not one but two rubber companies in nearby Kent, Ohio.
