MUNICH, Germany—Wacker Chemie A.G. introduced Powersil UV, a ultraviolet-light-activated silicone elastomer.
The silicone curing technology is geared toward applications in the transmission and distribution industry. The curing of the elastomer is initiated by brief irradiation with ultraviolet light, as opposed to conventional silicone elastomers, which cure at elevated temperatures, according to Wacker.
After that, the curing process proceeds independently at room temperature. The new technology allows for flexible and cost-efficient silicone processing, Wacker said.
Wacker listed many advantaged of the technology, including UV-silicones' ability to cure rapidly and having process parameters that can be adjusted to the users' requirements.
Also, no byproducts are released, the company said.
Other important applications include cable accessories, surge arresters and bushings, the company said.
