SALEM, Va. (May 19, 2010)—Yokohama Tire Corp. and United Steelworkers Local 1023 have reached a tentative four-year contract for the tire maker's Salem plant.
Yokohama's three-year labor contract with the union had expired May 16. The tentative deal—which would cover roughly 670 union employees—was reached at 11:52 p.m. on May 16, said Eric Angel, recording secretary for Local 1023.
The Salem facility also employs 165 non-union workers.
Angel declined to comment on details of the agreement, but said the membership will be presented with the package May 21, and a tentative vote is slated for May 28-29.
A Yokohama spokeswoman said the company will hold off comment until after the union votes on the proposed accord.
