KHUZESTAN, Iran (April 16, 2010)—Karoon Petrochemical Co, an isocyanate specialist, produced 1,200 metric tons of TDI (toluene diisocyanate) during February and March 2010—becoming the first isocyanate producer in the Middle East, with a nominal capacity of 40,000 metric tons per year, the company said.
According to the company's Web site, Karoon has an MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) capacity of 40,000 metric tons, making total isocyanate production about 80,000 metric tons.
Karoon said its TDI, which is produced at the company's production facility in the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone in the south west of Iran, has a quality of at least 99.9 percent, compared to a “default quality” of 99.5 percent.
The company said it also produced 2,000 metric tons of hydrogen chloride and 1,300 metric tons of sodium hypochlorite at its production plant during the same period.
