CYPRESS, Calif. (March 30, 2010)—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has verified Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corp.'s M154 steer-axle truck tire as SmartWay compliant when used together with the firm's M657 drive and M127 trailer tires.
The five-rib M154, designed for regional trucking applications, is Toyo's second steer-axle tire to be SmartWay verified, Toyo said, joining the long-haul-optimized M137.
The M154 uses Toyo's “e-balance” technology, which features a stiffer belt package, stiffer bead construction and optimization through simulation technology. Toyo claims the technology yields improved tire life and irregular wear resistance and reduced fuel consumption. The M154 has 22/32-inch tread depth.
Based on data provided by tire manufacturers and EPA testing and research, the EPA has determined that certain tire models can provide a reduction in nitrogen oxides emissions and can yield fuel savings of 3 percent or greater, relative to the “best selling” new tires for line haul trucks, when used on all five axles on long haul class 8 trucks.
