MONROVIA, Calif. (March 24, 2010) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has verified the Double Coin FT105 trailer tire as meeting its SmartWay energy-efficient product targets, according to China Manufacturers Alliance L.L.C., the tire's North American distributor.
China's Double Coin Holdings Ltd., the tire's manufacturer, becomes the eighth tire maker—and first from China—to have products SmartWay verified, according to the latest EPA list of verified low rolling resistance tires.
The FT105 is part of Double Coin's fuel-efficient tire lineup, which includes FR605 steer-position and FD405 drive-position radials, the tire maker said. The line of tires uses advanced tread compounds and internal construction to provide lower rolling resistance and longer mileage.
The FT105 is a collaborative effort between CMA staff in China and in North America, said CMA Vice President Aaron Murphy.
“The FT105 was designed from scratch to meet requirements of the several markets,” Murphy said. “In both the replacement and OEM channels, this type of product from Double Coin was required by the most progressive organizations as a means to bring additional value to their customers.”
SmartWay Transport is a collaboration between the EPA and the freight sector designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gases and air pollutant emissions, and improve energy security.
Based on data provided by tire manufacturers and EPA testing and research, the EPA has determined that using low rolling resistance tires on the steer, drive and trailer axle positions can provide a reduction in NOx emissions and an estimated fuel savings of 3 percent or greater relative to the “best selling” new tires.
