MUSCATINE, Iowa (March 19, 2010)— The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership has added the Bridgestone R260F and R250F commercial tires to its list of certified equipment. This means the SmartWay program has acknowledged the tires as fuel-efficient for truck fleets that have signed on to the partnership.
Manufactured by Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions in Muscatine, the R260F and R250F radials are designed specifically for long-time use on pickup-and-delivery (P&D) vehicles used in package and parcel delivery, beverage hauling, grocery, food service and other P&D operations. Approval of the R260F and R250F for the SmartWay program was a tremendous advance for P&D SmartWay participants, Bridgestone Bandag said, because most of the tires previously approved for the program were long-distance radials which aren't built for urban and local P&D operations.
Created in 2004, the SmartWay program is a long-term initiative for truck fleets of all sizes to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Among other things, the program recommends OE and replacement tires for optimum fuel efficiency. To be certified for the SmartWay program, tires must achieve at least 3 percent better fuel economy than the average “best-selling” new tire in its category, Bridgestone Bandag said.
